Henri La Roue was born on July 13, 1929 in the French capital, Paris. He later entered an art school to study painting. After graduating from school, he began to study wood carving. Henri La Roue later worked as an actor and engaged in puppet performances.

During his service in Austria, he contracted a virus that led to his discontinuation of puppet performance work. During his service, Henri La Roue had worked in various jobs, and his skills in painting and writing continued to improve.

After working in the advertising industry for a period of time, Henri La Roue worked at the La Borde Hospital (clinique de La Borde) in Cour-Cheverny from 1956 to 1960. Henri La Roue also conducted animation experiments here and taught patients painting, puppetry, and shadow play. In 1960, during his work at the psychiatric hospital, he created the animated short film "Les Dents du singe" (The Monkey's Teeth), which was included in a collection of works at the studio owned by another French animator, Paul Grimault. He received multiple awards for this work, including the Emile Cohl Award, the Mannheim Prize, and the French National Film Center Award.
